私が2009年の1月にバンタンを訪れた際、Design Foundation Course for Parsons AASの授業を見学し、皆さんの高いモチベーションと優秀な作品に触れて、大変感動いたしました。
バンタンの学生達からはAASプログラムに必要な密度の濃い学習システムに耐えうる集中力と能力を感じ、最適なプログラムだと確信しました。バンタンと同じように、パーソンズ大学では「デザイン」を他のアカデミックな分野と同等に重要なものとして考えているからです。

パーソンズ大学AASプログラムの特徴
パーソンズ大学のAAS（Associate in Applied Science）プログラムは、全米で初めての大学院レベルのアカデミックプログラムです。AASの学位は元々、コミュニティカレッジで取得できるような高校卒業者向けの為の学位でした。当初はパーソンズでも同じ様な目的でしたが、実際にプログラムに参加する学生が、特殊な人達ばかりだと言う事が次第に分かってきたのです。多くの生徒が高校卒業の学生ではなく、大学の卒業学位を既に持った生徒ばかりだったのです。そのため、多くの生徒が通常卒業に2年かかるAASプログラムを１年未満で卒業していました。そこで、卒業生をより確実に新しい仕事に向けて準備ができるようにするために、新しい授業プログラムを作成することが必要になりました。学生それぞれの経験や専門性、変化への野心を基に、言語を学ぶチャンス、過程や作業における知識、また各分野でエントリーレベルの仕事に就けるスキルを学ぶ事のできる授業システムを作る、ということです。きっと学生は大学院の学位を好んだことでしょう。けれども、実際デザインの業界は、人の持つ学位よりもその人がどんな仕事ができるか、どんな能力を持っているかという要素が、一番大事なのです。
私たちは自信を持ってこのプログラムを皆さんにおすすめできます。それはパーソンズ大学での経験が皆さんの将来に確実に力になると強く信じているからです。皆さんのデザインに関しての知識と作品、そしてパーソンズ大学で養ったスキルがあれば、きっと希望通りの仕事や将来を見つける事ができると思います。

To Vantan International Students
When I visited Vantan I was very impressed by the excellent work done by the students, they were focused and talented. I believe that they will do well in the AAS Program because they are prepared for the intense study we require. Clearly, at Vantan as well as at Parsons we view design as a serious course of study. The Vantan students who go to Parsons will also like the international environment of the school and NYC. Since design is global the students from Vantan who study in NYC will literally study design from a world perspective. I look forward to seeing you at Parsons.
Why AAS?
The AAS program at Parsons is a first-professional post-bachelor’s course of study in the States. It is an anomaly.
Let me explain. Associate in Applied Science degrees are the first post high school academic degree, most often offered at community colleges. This is what the Parsons AAS degree was at the beginning.
However, it became very clear that we had an unusual population in the programs?most students had bachelor’s degrees and they were therefore able to achieve our AAS in as little as one academic year (Fast/track– 34 credits). To make sure that the students were properly prepared for their new professions we had to develop a course of study that– using their academic experience, focus, and desire for change?provided the opportunity to acquire the language, understanding of process, and skills needed to gain an entry level position in their field (as promised in our literature).
The students would have probably preferred that it be a graduate degree but were also very aware that in the design professions, it’s not what degree you have, but rather, what your work looks like and what you can do that gets you a design job.
Our point of view is—that Parsons on a resume gets you an interview—-your portfolio and understanding of design gets you the job—and your skill keeps the job.
