The Momofuku Empire

I first experienced Momofuku as a senior in college when my roommate and I decided to skip Cancun and spend our spring break trying all the ramen restaurants in the City. One of our first stops was Momofuku Noodle Bar on First Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets. I won’t lie. I didn’t like it. I found the broth too salty and couldn’t finish it.

About two years later, I tried Momofuku Ssam Bar (Second Avenue on the corner of 13th Street and Second Avenue) and enjoyed it much more. In November 2008 (just a few months after I left the City), Momofuku owner David Chang expanded the Ssam Bar to include the Bakery and Milk Bar. Again, I won’t lie. I love this place. One side serves Momofuku’s delicious pork buns, and another side has dessert and amazing soft serve with flavors like marshmallow cereal milk. I opted for plain cereal milk with banana crunch topping. It tasted just like the high-sugar cereal breakfasts I ate as a kid: pure bliss.

I also spent a lot of my trip listening to people exalt about the Momofuku empire’s newest addition, Ko (First Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets). Mind you, none of these people had ever eaten at Ko. Getting a reservation there seems to require divine intervention. However, after reading Frank Bruni’s, New York Times food critic, review, I can understand the interest. (Click here for the review: http://events.nytimes.com/2008/05/07/dining/reviews/07rest.html). I am certainly interested myself.

Catching Up with New York City

I had the chance to catch up with my old stomping ground, New York City, about a week ago. New York City is one of those places that means something different to everyone, and, for me, it means food. Not surprisingly, I spent a majority of my time checking out anything food related. What follows are a few highlights.

Farmers Markets Still Green

Wall Street may be out of green, but the farmers markets remains strong. I stopped by two of my favorite:.

Located on the corner of E 7th Street and Avenue A in the East Village, the Tompkin Square Farmers Market is open Sundays 8am to 6pm year-round. I enjoyed a cup of hot cider while checking out the scrumptious selection of apples.

In the meantime, my friend found a stylish pooch, tied up on the other side of the Tompkin Square Dog Park. The park looked very different than I remembered. For one thing, there is a new high-tech playground on the south west side. More surprisingly, there were no dogs in sight! As a dog lover, I always enjoyed walking through the park on a Sunday and watching the dogs running around. Now, the only dog run seems to be on the north east side. What happened?

Having no answer to that question, I returned my focus to farmers markets and, later in the week, visited the famous Union Square Farmers Market. This market circles the square and is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8am to 6pm. Here you can find everything from biodynamic jam to t-shirts with images of Audrey Hepburn in animated geisha style. I have actually bought both of these items in the past. The jam was yummy, and the t-shirt, needless to say, was a big hit.

1962年8月27日　テキサス州オースティン出身　今年で45歳。

ニューメキシコ州サンタフェで10代を過ごす。ニューヨーク大学で美術史を専攻。
俳優を志し、ＣＭ出演等も在学中からこなしていた。その後、編入してパーソンズに入学。
1986年までインテリア・アーキテクチャー(建築)を学ぶ。このころからファッション業界で働いていくことを決意。
1988年ペリー・エリスで働き、デザインディレクターに就任。(同時期にマーク・ジェイコブスがペリーエリスにいた。)
1990年ニューヨークからミラノへ移り、グッチのレディースウェアのデザインスタッフに参加。
1994年トム・フォードがクリエイティブ・ディレクターに就任。
スタイリッシュなコーディネートとゴージャスな素材使いで、イメージを大幅に刷新しセクシーなイメージを確立。
2000年サンローラン・リヴ・ゴーシュのクリエイティブ・ディレクターも兼任。
2004年契約の更新をめぐり、親会社の仏ピノー・プランタン・ルドゥート(PPR)と折り合いがつかず、退陣。
2005年、ドメニコ・デソーレと共にトム・フォード社(ブランドとしてのトム・フォード)を設立。
トム・フォードの自身のブランドでは、クラシカルでオートクチュールのような手法でメンズファッションを展開
2008年、「007／慰めの報酬」からジェームズ・ボンドの着るスーツが
トム・フォードによるデザインとなることが決定。また同年、CFDAのメンズデザイナー・オブ・ザ・イヤーに輝く。

グッチのクリエイティブ・ディレクターに就任後のコレクションで大成功を収めたトム・フォードの新生グッチは、
世界中のセレブレティの目を引き戻し、マドンナやグウィネス・パルトロウなど
ハリウッドスターからの依頼が殺到。世界のトップブランドとしての地位を再び獲得しました。
ほとんど破産だったグッチ家の財産を、９９年までに４３億ドルの評価を得るまで成長させ、
グッチの最高経営責任者（ＣＥＯ）であるドメニコ・デ・ソーレとともに、
グッチを破たんの淵から救い世界３位のブランドに育て上げた立役者となりました。

元俳優のニヒルな色男。トム・フォード。ビジュアルもやることも「かっこいい！」としか言いようがありません。
パーソンズでは建築を勉強していて、その後ファッションに進んでいるということも興味深いですね。

「マーク・ジェイコブス」について取り上げていきます。

マーク・ジェイコブス（Mark･Jacobs）
1963年4月9日　ニューヨーク出身　今年で46歳。現在はパリに在住。

ハイスクール・オブ・アート・デザインに通いながら、当時バーニーズなどと並んで人気急上昇だったセレクトショップ、
「CHARIVARI（シャリバリ）」で働く。
1981年パーソンズに入学。卒業制作のニットのセーターで＜ペリー・エリス金の指貫き賞＞受賞。他に最優秀デザイン生徒賞を受賞。
1987年最年少でＣＦＤＡ＜アメリカ・ファッションデザイナー協会＞のペリー・エリス賞＜新人デザイナー賞＞を受賞。
1988年からダフィとともにペリー・エリスに入り、レディーススポーツウェア（カジュアルウェア）のデザインを監修する。
（同時期にはトム・フォードも一緒に働いていた）
1992年アメリカファッション業界、ウーマンズ・デザイナー・オブ・ザ・イヤ ー賞、を受賞。
1994年秋冬ニューヨーク・コレクションに自身のコレクション＜マーク ジェイコブス＞で初参加。
1997年ルイ・ヴィトンのアーティスティック・ディレクターに抜擢される。
1998年「マーク ジェイコブス｣ ブランドで２度目の｢ウーマンズ・デザイナー・オブ・ザ・イヤー｣を受賞。
2001年より、「マーク・バイ・マーク・ジェイコブス」をスタート。アメリカ・日本で同時発売。

日本でも大人気のマーク・ジェイコブス。活躍ぶりは言うまでもありませんが、
デザイナーとして最初に大きな契約を交わした相手が
日本企業（Marc Jacobs、Marc By Marc Jacobsの代理店）であった事から、
「僕がデザイナーとして成功できたのは日本の消費者のおかげ」と、親日家なんです！
また、無類のヘビースモーカーで、「ドラッグと酒はやめたが煙草はやめられない」とコメントしています。

パーソンズのファッションコースは各分野の中でも一番ハードだと言われています。
その分、リアルクローズにこだわったNYらしいデザイナーを数々輩出しているのも事実。
