“Think Global, Act Japanese.”

Parsons and the Educational Philosophy

One of the things that distinguish Parsons philosophy is that we drive to be leaders in the next generation of art and design practice. They believe strongly that the school positions them to be leaders and along the history of school is such that our graduates have gone on to some of the most important artisans and designers globally. In particular, I think that has to do with the fact is that the school is constantly looking for new areas, where art and design practices matter, and how we turn those into curriculum and learning for students. Parsons is the first school in the US to offer Fashion Design over hundred years ago. It wasn’t something you studied at school at that time. It was something that you maybe learn to do by picking up the trade from your family. So, going from the guild tradition, where the industry controls the education, to teaching art and design in the university environment has been one of the strengths of Parsons over time. We are the first to offer interior design, graphic design and communication design program. Today, we’re focusing on complex questions facing the society and the role design can play. I think what distinguishes school philosophy is the constant desire to see the value of art and design education and figure out how put that into place within the school, so our students are very much at the front edge.

International Students at Parsons

Parsons has the highest percentage of international students in the United States. There are many students studying in the United States with the graduate level in many universities. But at the undergraduate level, it’s unusual to have this many international students, which we do. I think this is partially what has to do with our international reputation. But secondly, I think it has to do with the fact that NYC is one of the design capitals in the world. NY and our reputation bring the students, where approximately 36% is international. The largest percentage of students is coming from South Korea, which is about 20%. We have approximately 7% from China, another 4 % is from Taiwan, and about 4 % from Japan. There’re also an increasing number of Latin American students coming to Parsons, particularly from Brazil and some from Chili.

Design Students in Asia

I think Chinese students are very different from Japanese students and very different from Korean students. Even within each country, there is certain variation. I do find that the educational model in the United States is very different than the educational models that I’ve witnessed in Japan, China and Korea, to just keep focused on those three. I think the thing that differentiates the US model is that it is much more questioning the hierarchy, the tradition of teacher to student, master to people. We, in the United States, are a little more irrelevant about this. Our students are used to the process of challenging the faculty. It’s actually part of the learning environment. I find that many of the students who come to the United States first need to get comfortable with that dynamic because I think it’s a little less, so what I’ve experienced here. There is a very strong tradition of training of skill based learning. They can combine with this kind of open-ended innovative, breaking-rules approach. It’s quite magical when you bring these two together. That kind of dynamic is how you develop new things where the innovation comes from.

Message for Vantan

I think this idea “Think Globally, Act Japancese” is that this theme you are bringing up is the global questions of design. That’s one of the brilliant, fascinating and exciting moments of the 20th century as design became global. The problem is that everyone forgot about local as it became global. And, so the modernist movement tended to flatten the cultural differences and historical importance. The world has been designed to function the way it functions. That’s the good news and bad news at the same time. Issues facing children growing up in Tokyo are similar to the issues children in NY because the world is at a very fragile moment. But, how we answer that would be very different in Tokyo and very different in NY. We need to work together and also understand culture and tradition that are unique to each of these places. I think that the philosophy you’ve beautifully capsulated from the Japanese prospective.

We are very pleased and honored by our relationship with Vantan. We are hoping to deepen our relationship in key areas, where we have strengths overlapping. The strength is obviously fashion scenario, which we already do. We do a lot of game design in terms of how gaming plays a role in learning. I think Japan is sort of the center of game design, still globally in a lot of ways. So, we are looking to build out that relationship deeper. I think through the business design side we also have overlapping interests as well. I think those three areas provide opportunity to further the relationship going forward with Vantan.

パーソンズ大学のAAS(Associate in Applied Science)プログラムは、全米で初めての大学院レベルのアカデミックプログラムです。

To Vantan International Students

When I visited Vantan I was very impressed by the excellent work done by the students, they were focused and talented. I believe that they will do well in the AAS Program because they are prepared for the intense study we require. Clearly, at Vantan as well as at Parsons we view design as a serious course of study. The Vantan students who go to Parsons will also like the international environment of the school and NYC. Since design is global the students from Vantan who study in NYC will literally study design from a world perspective. I look forward to seeing you at Parsons.

Why AAS?

The AAS program at Parsons is a first-professional post-bachelor’s course of study in the States. It is an anomaly.
Let me explain. Associate in Applied Science degrees are the first post high school academic degree, most often offered at community colleges. This is what the Parsons AAS degree was at the beginning.
However, it became very clear that we had an unusual population in the programs?most students had bachelor’s degrees and they were therefore able to achieve our AAS in as little as one academic year (Fast/track– 34 credits). To make sure that the students were properly prepared for their new professions we had to develop a course of study that– using their academic experience, focus, and desire for change?provided the opportunity to acquire the language, understanding of process, and skills needed to gain an entry level position in their field (as promised in our literature).
The students would have probably preferred that it be a graduate degree but were also very aware that in the design professions, it’s not what degree you have, but rather, what your work looks like and what you can do that gets you a design job.
Our point of view is—that Parsons on a resume gets you an interview—-your portfolio and understanding of design gets you the job—and your skill keeps the job.

Why Parsons?

It’s an outstanding design school with a faculty of design professionals.
NYC is one of the great design centers in the world.
It’s in NYC, the most multi-cultural of cities.
Our students are 40% international.
The AAS course of study is unique with a pedagogy developed to meets the educational needs of a very specific constituency.
92% of AAS grads have a job in their profession six months out of school.
